Suicide is the 10th leading cause of death for Americans. And, about 1 in 10 Virginia teens have attempted suicide. On October 17th, Above the Darkness will bring hope to impacted families and awareness for suicide prevention.

Putting Suicide Prevention Front and Center

Above the Darkness is an annual event that creates real momentum for prevention sponsored by MHAF. Their goal is to raise funds for suicide prevention programs, escalate awareness throughout the community, and encourage families and friends that have been impacted by suicide.

The walk will begin and end at Spotsylvania Courthouse Village, and offer a chance to gather with others who are working to remove the stigma around suicide. Following the morning walk, a family-oriented afternoon of entertainment and activities will make this a full day of encouragement and support.

Helping Those Affected In Our Own Community

“We couldn’t be happier to partner with MHAF for this event. Because of their support, all funds we raise will now stay in our area and help continue our mission of saving lives,” said Amy Jones, the longtime director of this annual walk.

Funds raised will support local suicide prevention programs, as well as help to expand the “More than Sad” program that is in high demand in regional high schools. This program teaches teenagers to be aware of risk factors often associated with suicide.

Join Us and Walk for Suicide Prevention

The walk will be held on October 17th at Spotsylvania Courthouse Village from 9 a.m. to 11a.m. with family entertainment and events held until 4 p.m. Registered walkers will receive a t-shirt. Free food and beverages will be available after the walk.

A special part of Above the Darkness is a memory wall where community members can remember their loved ones. Colored beads will be used to represent how each participant has been touched by suicide.

We hope that you will join us as we continue our mission to provide education and services for those with mental health needs, and help those affected by suicide rise Above the Darkness.
